Trucks come in many sizes to meet many different people's needs. Whether you need something powerful enough to haul equipment or something to tow the camper for the weekend, there is a Ford truck that is right for you. Two such trucks are the Ford F-150 and Ford Ranger.
To help you figure out which truck might work for you, West Point Ford has put together this Ford F-150 vs. Ford Ranger comparison. Our friends in West Point, King William, and Williamsburg, VA, should give this a read!
Ford F-150 vs Ford Ranger: Engine and Performance Options
The Ford Ranger offers one engine with impressive power. The standard 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder provides 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. To help with fuel economy, the engine is equipped with Auto Start-Stop Technology, which shuts off the engine while you're stopped (like at a red light) to save fuel.
The 2021 Ford F-150 does have a lot more engines to choose from-seven in total. Each option produces more than 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. There is even a hybrid engine for those with a fuel-conscious mind.
The standard engine for the F-150 has:
- 290 horsepower
- 265 lb-ft of torque
- EPA-estimated 20 city/24 highway MPG
Both trucks, however, do offer two drivetrains: 4x2 (rear-wheel drive) and 4x4 (4-wheel drive)-the latter which offers torque to all four wheels.
Ford F-150 vs Ford Ranger: Towing and Payload Capacity
Both trucks, for their size and class, offer impressive towing capacities.
Looking at the F-150, it offers a maximum 14,000 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped. With this much power, you can tow things like:
- Midsize to large campers
- Horse trailers
- Powerboats
- Construction equipment
The F-150 doesn't disappoint when it comes to payload capacity, either. When properly equipped, it has a maximum payload capacity of 3,325 pounds.
When it comes to the Ranger, you'll still get plenty of power with this compact truck. It offers 7,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity when properly equipped. With this much capability, you can still tow boats and smaller trailers. The vehicle's payload capacity then tops out at 1,860 pounds when properly equipped.
F-150 vs Ranger: Off-Roading Capability
Where the Ranger really shines is when you hit the off-roading trails. This Ford model has plenty of technology to make your off-roading adventures that much more fun.
The Ranger has an available Tremor Off-Road Package, which pushes the vehicle's capabilities one step further. The package includes:
- Magnetic-painted alloy wheels
- Modified heavy-duty off-road suspension
- Trail Controlâ„¢
- Terrain Management Systemâ„¢
The F-150 can also handle going off-road. For example, it has Hill Descent Controlâ„¢, which maintains a set speed while you control the steering to get down a steep hill. This model also has off-road packages with features like an electronic-locking rear axle, skid plates, and off-road-tuned shock absorbers.
